  Teacher Development Programme for Primary School Teachers - 30 day  
 
30-DAY PRIMARY LEVEL TEACHER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Proposed One Month Teacher Development Programme in lieu of the on-going 60-day and 90-day in-service Teacher Development Programme for English teachers at the primary and secondary levels respectively

Aims:

  • to have larger coverage / reach
  • to create a core group of facilitating cascade mode training at the block and district levels
  • to facilitate effective and meaningful follow-up programmes.

 

Objectives:

  • developing teacher competence in terms of language proficiency and classroom centered communication skills for effective content transaction
  • developing teaching competence in terms of skills and techniques required for content transaction
  • equipping the trainees with a set of skills required for effective classroom language testing; content development and task designing
  • developing trainer skills required for training teachers at the block and district levels
  • creating awareness about / of the trends in all related areas of ELT in particular the integration of technology in approaches to teaching
  • promoting reflecting processes that facilitate teacher autonomy and development.

 

Duration:          30 days

Mode:                 Lecture, tutorials, workshops, technology aided instructions, mentoring

Certifications:                A certificate will be awarded to those successful teachers based on their performance in the course and test and also in the continuous evaluation procedures used throughout the programme. The course end test will have also one-paper (all inclusive) for three hours.

                                Successful trainees will be given / awarded grades based on their performance in their assessed teaching practice with peers, course end test and performance throughout the course.

No. of Hours:  25 working hours / 150 hours of instruction.


 

Content:

  • Listening and Speaking

 

Objectives:

  • developing the ability to listen and comprehend, listen and respond, listen and identify, make notes
  • developing the ability to express intelligibly using simple English and communicate effectively.

 

  • Aural comprehension of graded texts, dialogues, instructions, announcements, radio and TV programme, lecture etc.,

 

  • presentations skills and classroom talk
  • communicative functions in English – (greeting, introducing, agreeing and disagreeing, asking for advice, giving advice, expressing suggestions, complaining, making requests, apologizing, asking and giving information)
  • story comprehension and story narration
  • practice in the language lab
  •  Phonetics:

 

  • sounds and symbols
  • segmental and supra-segmentals
  • other nuances of speech such as the use of strong and weak forms
  • simple word and sentence level transcription
  • practice in reading aloud different kinds of texts (all these will be transacted and continuously evaluated through quiz, debate and elocution)
  • Reading and Writing

Objectives:

  • developing the ability to read and comprehend different discourse type texts and express (pictorial, non-pictorial, short and long argumentative, expository) for interpretation
  • developing the ability to read for interpretation and evaluation (through skimming and scanning) and in-depth reading (e.g. for pictorial texts, graphs, tables and so on...)
  • developing reading skills for intensive and extensive purposes
  • developing the ability to express through writing what has been comprehended and interpreted
  • developing the ability to write at the word, sentence and paragraph levels, different kinds of texts (letters, slogans, paragraphs, descriptive, narrative, argumentative, expository, pictorial presentations and so on. . . )
  • developing mechanics of writing (punctuation)
  • developing the ability to write cohesively and coherently

Content:

  • reading and comprehending different kinds of texts – skimming and scanning, for inferring and evaluating – using  other meaning extracting strategies, for intensive and extensive reading
  •  
  • trans-coding information (maps, tables, charts, graphs, etc...)
  • different genres (poetry, drama, autobiography, novels)
  • accuracy and appropriacy in writing different kinds of texts for expressing thoughts and communication (letters, instructions, dialogues, reports, expanding outlines, paragraph development)
  • use of cohesive devices for coherence
  • process of writing

 

  • Grammar / Language Use and Usage

 

Objectives:

  • developing the ability to be accurate and appropriate in the use of language – vocabulary, sentence and structure choice both in speaking and writing
  • creating sensitivity to the use of language

 

  • word level (parts of speech)
  • Sentence level (subject – verb agreement, types of sentences and transformation)
  • Structures: Articles, prepositions, cohesive devices, modal auxiliaries
  • Common errors and remediation
  • Classroom Dynamics and Strategies (Methods of Teaching)

 

Objectives:

  • creating an awareness of the trends in language teaching and testing
  • developing the ability to understand the different classroom conditions and suitable classroom need based methodology
  • facilitating the existing knowledge of classroom pedagogy through practice and interaction
  • getting to terms with the field requirements and equipping with the set of skills and techniques required to tide over the systemic and classroom centered issues

 

  • Methods and approaches in practice (focus on CLT and TBT)
  • Methods and techniques specific for teaching young learners
  • Teaching large and multi-grade classes
  •  Task designing skills
  • Designing supplementary materials
  • Testing and evaluation – trends and techniques
  • A comprehensive view of the curricular initiatives in practice with special reference to the member states and focus on ABL, DOP, etc...
  • Trainer skills

Teaching Practice:

                Facilitating the application of acquired knowledge in terms of language use, method and techniques and content transaction by teaching the peers and thus to develop hands on experience in teacher training as well.
