1.  The Institute

            The Regional Institute of English South India, Bangalore was founded in June 1963 with the broad objective of improving standards of English language teaching in the four southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Recently Puducherry also became a member state of the Institute.

            During its four decades of service to the cause of education, the Institute has carved a niche for itself in the fields of Teacher Training, Materials Production and Action Research.

            Situated in the sprawling campus of Bangalore University, the Institute provides a conductive ambience for interactive learning and professional growth. Besides short term and long term teacher development and trainer development programmes, the Institute also offers Post Graduate Diploma in English Language Teaching and Diploma in Communication through distance mode. Some specialized programmes in English for specific purposes are also available.

2.  Infrastructural Facilities:

            The Institute provides a range of rich learning support systems which include the following:

  • The Library

The library stocks rich collection of books, journals and materials on ELT related issues. The books are arranged in a scientific manner to help the users. It is computerised to facilitate easy access.

  • Language Laboratory

The Institute has an audio language laboratory with its own teaching / learning materials and a multi-media laboratory with computers.

  • Computer Laboratory

A fully equipped computer laboratory with Internet facility is available for the use of trainees / students

  • Recording Room

The Institute generates its own materials supportive to teaching and learning. Audio cassettes form the major part of such production. A well-equipped recording room facilitates this activity

  • Conference Hall

A state-of-the-art Conference Hall to host National and International Conferences has recently been added to the Infrastructure of the Institute.

  • Classrooms

Large ventilated classrooms and an auditorium with adequate furniture and other modern gadgets facilitate face-to-face and tele mode transactions.

  • Accommodation

Comfortable accommodation with modern amenities is available for men and women teachers / scholars. The Institute also has a canteen to cater to the needs of the inmates. Decent and healthy food is made available. The charges / tariffs are affordable. Telephone and Laundry facilities add to the comfort.

  • Recreation Facilities

Some facilitates for outdoor and indoor games are available.

COURSE DETAILS:

Objectives:

The course aims to help the students

    • improve their proficiency in English language
    • acquire knowledge and skills related to English language teaching
    • become effective classroom teachers
    • become aware of the need for continuous professional development
    • acquire core trainer skills in English language teaching

Content:

In addition to the above, students will be required to engage themselves in supervised and assessed practice teaching when they attend the final contact programme

Contact Programme:

There will be two compulsory contact programmes. The first programme will be for 3 working days and the second programme will be for 25 working days

Learning Materials:

Each subject / paper mentioned above will have four modules. Each module will have 3 – 4 units. As soon as the student is admitted to the course he / she will be provided with the following:

  • Learning materials (6 booklets) and assignment details (3 in each subject i.e. 18 assignments)
  • Schedule for despatching completed assignments
  • Schedule for the two compulsory contact programmes (for Batch 11A and Batch 11B)
  • Identify card (students are advised to bring the Identity Card when they attend the contact programmes)

 Assessment and Evaluation Certificates:

A student who fulfils the following requirements will be awarded a certificate at the end and given a grade on a six-point scale. The final grade point average will be based on the student’s performance in the assignments meant for internal assessment and final test and teaching practice besides fulfilling other requirements like 80% attendance in both the contact programmes and adhering to the dates.

  • Students attending the contact programmes will not be paid TA / DA for their attendance
  • Out-station participants however may make use of the hostel facilities available for their stay against nominal payment
