Objectives:
- empowering the teachers with the required linguistic competence
- equipping the teachers with a set of skills and techniques required for effective classroom teaching the transaction of the prescribed content in particular
- providing hands-on experience in designing meaningful and useful classroom activities / tasks for developing language skills
Programme:
The programme was inaugurated on 21.10.2009 by Mr. Lakshman, Assistant Project Manager, SSA, Tamil Nadu. Ms. Selvi Kathiyayini, CEO in her address repeatedly told the participants that English language was the need of the hour and stress upon them developing communicative skills for the good of both the learners and themselves. The participants were trained in the Listening, Reading and Speaking Skills. In order to enrich the linguistic competence of the participants, considerable amount of time was spent on Analysis of Common Errors in their usages. Enough emphasis also was laid on Word Stress and Intonation in their Spoken English. There were sessions on ‘How do the children acquire language?’ followed by Sources of Language Acquisition,
Case Study, Language Functions and Task Designing.
Output:
The participants were made to realize that there were natural resources available for language acquisition. Thus, they were guided in exploiting stories, dialogues, rhymes and songs, role plays as effectively means of learning / teaching the target language.

90-day CELT Programme for Secondary School Teachers |

Objectives:
- to enable the teachers to acquire / develop the language skills and techniques needed to transact the content effectively
- to enable the teachers to use the teaching / learning materials effectively besides creating the materials that suit their learners needs
- to equip the teachers in using multimedia and thus integrate technology with the actual content and in the curriculum
- to equip them with trainer skills and thus help them conduct training programmes if necessary
- to motivate the teachers for taking up action research by providing better insight into the actual process
Programme:
The 90 day CELT programme for the secondary school teachers of English of the member states got inaugurated on 21.10.2009
65 teachers from the member states participated in the programme. In this 90 day programme the participants had sessions on content shown in the new curriculum designed for the purpose. The transaction of the content was through input sessions, tutorials, teacher presentations, debates, quiz, language la sessions for hands on experience, computer lab sessions and so on. The programme included teaching practice sessions (peer group) which enabled them to have rich experience in trying out the pedagogical principles and techniques of teaching English and analyzing the textbooks. The programme included training in module presentation for short term training programme. The participants had the opportunity to participate in sports activities sand display their talents and other related abilities.
Output:
The feedback from the participants reveals that the course was highly useful and purposeful besides that it could create awareness in the field of English language education and English language testing. The course ended on 11 January, 2010.

60 day CELT Programme for Primary School Teachers (Course 17 & 18) |

Objectives:
- to improve the proficiency of teachers in English
- to help teachers to gain an insight into different methods and techniques of curriculum transactions
- to create autonomous, reflective teaching practitioners
- to engage teachers to add value to curriculum
Programme:
The main aim of the programme was to develop the linguistic and professional competence of the teachers. The programme comprised five papers (Effective Communication, Language Studies, Reading and Writing, TESL and Teacher Development and Teaching Practice) and they were formulated and transacted keeping specific objectives in mind. The syllabus of each paper was divided into two parts; The Content and The Process. The content listed out the components to be taught and the process dealt with the procedure of handling those components. Most of the processes involved group discussion and pair work. Other than teaching of these contents, there were classes allotted for language lab, library sessions and tutorials. Teaching Practice was conducted and the participants were expected to prepare lesson plans on the theme and skill assigned to them and they were asked to execute it under the supervision of the faculty members.
In addition to all the above they also enjoyed participating in the All India Seminar held from 1 to 3 March, 2010. They were given a book kit (Reading a Second Language, ELT World ‘A Bird’s Eye View’, The English Classroom Bi-annual Journal and Reading Cards) and an Essential Activator. They were also taken on a one-day Educational Trip to Mysore.
Output:
The feedback session on the final days revealed that the participants were very happy with the inputs given and activities conducted. They were happy with the tutorial classes. They said that the exercises were enriching and interactive. Also they were highly impressed by the language lab. However, they were a little dissatisfied with the limited number of classes allotted to each group. A few participants have made suggestions of starting state based programme in RIESI instead of the regular interstate to avoid state related disagreements.

Course: Satellite Based Training Programme for the Primary School Teachers of Andhra Pradesh
Report:
A four day workshop for master trainers for conducting teleconference to teachers at the Mandal level was conducted at RVM SSA, Hyderabad from 17-03-2010 to 20-03-2010. 150 master trainers who attended the special Resource person training programme given by RIESI attended the training. Out of the 150 master trainers, a core team consisting of 40 members was selected. This core team along with RIESI resource persons worked for two days for preparing a resource material and module for teacher training and teleconference. The material and modules were prepared to impart competence to teachers in language proficiency and pedagogic proficiency. As the public examinations were scheduled, SSA AP wanted the teleconference to be postponed to July 2010.

Report:
A four day training programme for master trainers of SSA Kerala was conducted at RIESI on 23-03-2010 to 25-03-2010 as per the request received from SPD Kerala. The main objective of the programme was to develop a resource material and module for imparting training during vacation to all the primary teachers in Kerala. The 40 core resource persons who attended the training were given input in language and pedagogy. They were also given exposure in using the digital multimedia language lab and multimedia materials. The resource persons with the help of RIESI developed a module for teacher training.
